Relationship with Self and Others

It is not always easy to recognize or understand our emotions. At times, they may be difficult to make sense of and can create inner confusion, uncertainty, or even conflict.

This can lead to avoidance, resistance, distraction, or difficulty staying in contact with these emotions and inner sensations. Here, the aim is not to make emotions disappear, but to create space so that, gradually, we can recognize them, stay with them a little longer, attend to them, and listen to what they may be telling us.

Quite often, emotions can act as signposts, pointing toward something important about a personal need, desire, expectation, or a boundary that may require our attention.

A boundary does not simply mean saying “no”; it also means being able to first sense how far I can and want to go at any given moment. In this sense, it is a dynamic process that involves continually returning to myself and to what I am experiencing. Particularly in relationships, it can sometimes be easy to lose contact with what the person genuinely needs.

Learning to return to myself means developing greater sensitivity to my inner experience and to my boundaries, so that they can gradually become an inner sense of “this is as far as I can go”, rather than simply a rule that I “should” follow.

Behind such processes, there may be deeper difficulties related to a sense of personal worth, adequacy, or self-esteem. The way we speak to ourselves can significantly shape how we experience ourselves, as well as how we relate and behave within different kinds of relationships.

Within therapy, these processes can be noticed, given space, and understood without judgment, with greater kindness and compassion toward oneself.
